    poisonous vs. venomous

    in vocabulary and usage

Although these two words seem to be synonymous, there is a crucial distinction. If something is poisonous, it will harm you if you ingest it. If something is venomous, it will harm you if it bites you.

You would therefore, not want to be bitten by venomous snake, nor would you want to eat poisonous mushrooms.
